As one of the launching events of the FOIE GRAS project, Dr. Paulo Oliveira, the network coordinator, gave a talk on Saturday 14th of January at the Science Museum in Coimbra, Portugal. The 2 hour session was entitled “Será que a gordura é prejudicial para a saúde?” (Is Fat Bad for Your Health?), in which Dr. Oliveira talked to the public about mitochondria and their critical role in energy production, redox homeostasis and apoptosis. Within this framework, and given the importance of mitochondria in these processes, special attention was placed in discussing issues related to fatty liver metabolism and disease and their relationship with obesity and unhealthy lifestyles. Within this context, the research on Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) by the FOIE GRAS project was presented to the general public as one of the first outreach activities by the network.
